tohdf5 deprecation in favour of h5extract

I've heard that tohdf5 is apparently considered deprected, and seems to be removed in current alpha releases. I (and probably a lot of other ML people) are relying on it as part of the preprocessing pipeline, so I wonder what the reason for deprecation is, and what you recommend as an alternative.
